Shibboleth

Shibboleth is a method for distributed authentication and authorization of web applications and services. On this page, we answer your questions about Shibboleth.

Shibboleth allows you to access licensed databases without having to connect to the university network.

Members of the University of Bonn can use their Uni-ID to access the USL's electronic resources (databases, e-journals, e-books, etc.) via Shibboleth on any Internet-enabled device without installing any software beforehand.

Frequently asked questions

Employees and students of the University of Bonn can generally access licensed services via Shibboleth using their Uni-ID.

Admission for other user groups depends on the respective license agreement and is noted in the information field of the description in the database information system (DBIS).

Currently, not all licensed services are accessible via Shibboleth yet. However, this option is being expanded gradually.

You can find a list of included services in DBIS.

For electronic services that are not yet accessible via Shibboleth, connect to the university network from off campus via VPN as you normally would.

Authorized users access the desired electronic resource, such as a database, e-journal, or e-book. With some providers, you are immediately directed to a login interface.

In other cases, you must first select your country (or "DFN-AAI" for Germany) and then select the University of Bonn from a dropdown menu. Then, you can log in with your Uni-ID and corresponding password.

For more information on Shibboleth authentication, visit the University IT and Data Center (Hochschulrechenzentrum, HRZ) authentication for institutes page.

The required login data corresponds to the Uni-ID and password that students (upon enrolment) and university employees receive from the University IT and Data Center (Hochschulrechenzentrum, HRZ).

If you do not belong to one of these groups, you can find out on the HRZ website whether you can apply for a Uni-ID.

With the assignment of the Uni-ID, you will also be assigned the role (e.g. as a student, employee or guest) via which Shibboleth access is controlled.

Read more detailed information about the Uni-ID on the HRZ website.

Generally, it is not necessary to log in as soon as you are physically on campus and access the Internet via a PC or Wi-Fi.

Data transmitted via Shibboleth is protected by data privacy laws. Since Shibboleth only requires minimal information, it is not possible to draw conclusions about your specific identity.
