Studying and Working in the Main Library
Study spaces, video and working spaces, scanning stations, service PCs and group study pods—the library is a place to study and work that offers you a range of spaces kitted out with various features and equipment.
Workspaces and equipment
The reading room on the ground floor of the Main Library offers more than 300 quiet places for concentrated silent work.
Workspaces in the reading room
The reading room has 327 reservable workstations available exclusively for university students. In addition, there are 59 workstations for all users and one accessible workstation. Please refer to the floor plan for the layout of the workstations. You can see which workstations have power and network connections by checking the booking system.
All workstations are intended exclusively for quiet individual work.
Accessible Workstations
The main library offers a barrier-free workspace for members of the University of Bonn and external users. To use this facility, you must register in advance by email or by phone at +49 228 73 7214.
The information center of the main library combines various work areas for individual and group work, research, or participation in video conferences. Quiet conversation is permitted throughout the center.
Group study pods
The three group workstations each offer up to six students from the University of Bonn the opportunity to work collaboratively. Two of the stations are equipped with power outlets and a large screen, which you can use with the SPrinT software (see SPrinT quick start guide, SPrinT instructions for Mac, SPrinT FAQs) to work on documents together. There is also a chat board available in the middle room. The appropriate pens can be borrowed from the reading room.
Lernraum+
Exclusively for students of the University of Bonn, there are 5 study boxes available in the Lernraum+ (HB IZ Lernraum+) of the main library, which can be booked by groups of up to 4 people for collaborative work.
Workstations and video conferencing stations
The 28 workstations (HB IZ video conference and workstations) are suitable for quiet work alone or in pairs and can be booked by all users for up to 4 hours. At the mostly electrified stations, quiet conversation and participation in video conferences via headset are permitted.
Service-PCs
All users of the USL Bonn can search the bonnus search portal and databases on the 6 service PCs (HB IZ service PCs). You can also read, share, edit, and save documents here, for example, on your own USB stick (please bring your own!).
Scanning stations
At the four scanning stations (HB IZ scanners), documents up to A2 size can be scanned in color, grayscale, or black and white free of charge and saved to your own USB stick (please bring your own!). One of the stations is equipped with a microfilm scanner.
For working with special collections and prints published before 1850, the Curtius Reading Room, a special reading room in the main library, offers a number of quiet workstations.
Workspaces in the Curtius reading room
There are six individual workstations available here for working with documents from before 1850 and for using special collections. One workstation is also equipped with a microfilm scanner. Please note the separate opening hours: Mon - Fri: 10 am - 4:30 pm.
