What does "Digital Humanities" mean?
The Terms Digital Humanities or eHumanities (enhanced Humanities) encompass research approaches that process questions in the field of humanities with the help of IT-based methods. The research objects (prints, manuscripts, sound carriers, films and other media) are digitised, analysed with digital technology and researched.
The generated research data in the field of the humanities are processed with the aid of existing or newly developed software and are published digitally or in printed form, depending on requirements.
Methods of Digital Humanities are applied to the whole spectrum of research in the humanities. Digital editions and algorithmic text analysis also belong to this field as well as digital image research in art history or musicological analysis of scores by means of XML-based markup languages.
How do the "Digital Humanities" work?
Due to the necessary interaction of specialist discipline, information processing, analysis as well as evaluation, an interdisciplinary cooperation between various parties in the digital humanities is well-suited and recommended.
The three core disciplines are formed by scientific discipline, information science and applied computer science that can unfold great potential when combined and can mutually profit from each other. The central question focuses on the humanities.
Whereas every project is specifically examined for the methodology used, and often requires IT-related development effort, various steps of procedure have developed as digitisation, various data transformations, working with virtual research environments or the publication and adequate presentation of digital research results of already established methods and recognized international standards.
Competence centres for individual fields of digital humanities actively participate in the realization of research projects.
