Special Collection with a focus on Agriculture

The branch library MNL includes the Bonn library site of the ZB MED - Leibniz-Informationszentrum Lebenswissenschaften (information centre life sciences). It collects international literature related to science-oriented disciplines such as nutrition, environment and agriculture. Therefore the holdings for these subjects are exceptionally wide and rich in Bonn.

Digital Collections

Bonn University Library offers free online access to a steadily increasing collection of items, that are available online. Digital collections include digitised copies that are part of Bonn University Library holdings of early printed books. It is intended to successively increase this collection by further electronic publications.

Historical Prints

Since it was founded in 1818, Bonn University Library has been provided the task of providing access to literature for the University. In 1824 it also became a deposit library for the whole Prussian Rhine Province. Thus its bookstock increased to more than 600 000 copies until the 1940s (Inventory of 1935: approx. 620 000 copies). Roughly a third fell victim to a disastrous bombing raid on 18 October 1944.

Since it was founded in 1818, Bonn University Library has been collecting newspapers. Its collection of historical newspapers is  increasing by the growing number of depository copies. These days historical newspapers from the Rhineland are being digitised and referenced in Digital Collections.

Diesterweg und MünchowHistorical Libraries

In 1818/1819 the core collection of the newly founded Bonn University Library consisted of the dissolved libraries of the closed Duisburg University, of the philologist Adolf Gottlieb Christian Harleß and of St. Adelheid's Monastery in Pützchen. In the course of the following decades further libraries of famous persons and institutions were also included. Although many of these historical libraries are not completely preserved, they are sufficiently comprehensive to call them a collection.

Abendländische HandschriftManuscripts

Bonn University Library holds a medium-sized collection of manuscripts. It includes 485 occidental and 272 oriental manuscripts. 174 medieval book manuscripts are complemented by a collection of manuscript fragments.

InkunabelIncunabula

Since 1891 incunabula are being shelved separately in Bonn University Library. The collection includes both typical theological items and law commentaries as well as books of ancient writers. The prints originate largely from locations in the Rhineland. In 1891 they have been described in a catalogue by Ernst Voullième. Since 2004 the holdings of Bonn University Library are being shown in the catalogue of incunabula INKA (Tübingen University) and in the Digital Collections of Bonn University Library.

Gottfired und Johanna KinkelBequests

Today bequests are at the centre of the manuscripts collection of Bonn University Library. The Library has 109 complete and partial estates, in particular from researchers of Bonn University, plus 74 smaller fractional estates and collections. During World War II 39 bequests have been completely lost, others have been partially destroyed. The most important and most intensely used estates are those of Ernst Robert Curtius, a Romance philologist, as well as of the mathematician Felix Hausdorff and of the philosopher Erich Rothacker.

The music collection mainly consists of correspondence and writings from Robert Schumann, Benjamin Klein and the Prince Georg of Prussia.
