Legal Information

At Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn, the Philosophical Department, the Department of Mathematics and Science, the Medical Department, the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Political Science and Economics currently allow doctorate candidates to publish their doctoral thesis electronically in addition to the previously common forms of publication.

On the basis of the decision of the Conference of the Ministers for Education and Cultural Affairs (in German) dated 30 November 1997 and in agreement with the Department for Science and Research of North Rhine-Westphalia, doctoral theses of other departments can also be published on the Internet, if this form of publication is not yet explicitly mentioned in the respective dissertation regulations. However, the consent of the respective department is required for this. Please inquire at your department’s administration.

The publication of a doctoral thesis is part of the promotion procedure. We therefore need a declaration signed by you in which you grant us the right to publish, store and convert your thesis.

Your copyright will not be limited by the publication of your doctoral thesis on the University’s document server!
For example, a partial or complete additional publication of your thesis is possible at any time, as book or journal article, via a publisher or privately. We will gladly put a reference to the publisher’s publication on to our server next to your electronic publication.

It is however important to note the following:

  • You need to clarify potential questions of copyright yourself; you especially need to check with your publisher if your publisher permits an additional electronic publication on the document server of Bonn University Library.
For further information on this topic, please read the German copyright law "Gesetz über Urheberrecht und verwandte Schutzrechte" (in German) and notes on the German copyright law, (in German), put together by Dr. Klaus Graf.
  • Because of the fast and easy accessibility of your electronic doctoral thesis, it is especially important (particularly if your text contains sensitive data) that by publishing you do not infringe the rights of others.

Postdoctoral Theses

Besides doctoral theses, also postdoctoral theses by members of Bonn University are made available on the University’s document server. For these publications a fee of € 40.00 is charged. (see also Fees)
Since postdoctoral theses are not subject to compulsory publication, a special form of declaration (in German) is valid for the online publication of postdoctoral theses, and no printed copies have to be submitted.
